Review: Building a Single Shot Falling Block Rifle Action
By Joseph D'Alessandro Editor | RealGuns.Com

This book, or more appropriately "booklet" at 41 pages, represents one of the best values I've received from a publication. At first I was annoyed when I opened my $16 package and found this little black and white work inside, but as I read each page, I realized that I had probably not seen so much firearms knowledge compressed into so few pages; no ads, no author ego, no winding yarns - just "Here is how this action works, this is the logic supporting the design, these are the materials, this is why they were selected, this is the type of use the design was made to support, here's the machine selection and set up, this is the final result".

Could I build, or would I soon be able to build, the stout single shot target rifle that is the heart of the book? No way, but I'm a terrible machinist and, even if I practice until I'm 99 years old, I would not have what is essentially the skill of a experienced, quality, commercial machinist. Still, by the time I got to the third page I knew a lot more about controlling or building accuracy into a single shot rifle; what parts can move, what needs to be locked up, and what are the mechanical interdependencies that provide consistency of performance. I also knew what was and was not a good carbon steel alloy selection, to what level parts should be heat treated and how to design and build adjustable headspace into a firearm.

The author, within the next 5 pages, goes on to provide the calculations that went into determining size and form of the overall action and critical parts; defining how big was big enough, how much latitude was designed in for safety. Actually, just a complete explanation of trigger and ignition parts, purpose and theory of operation, were worth much more than the price of the book.

"Building a Single Shot Falling Block Rifle Action" is a compilation of 8 articles published in "The Home Shop Machinist" magazine. Unlike other compilations of articles that are nothing more than a series of disjointed reprints, this book was nicely put together in a seamless fashion, and reads as one uniform work. There are no missing reference pictures or passages, the paper is quality glossy stock, and the black and white pictures and illustrations are clear and well done.

The scope and substance of the booklet is not limited to providing theoretical knowledge to the great unskilled masses such as myself. There is enough detail and explanation for a competent machinist to produce this rifle, and the publication concludes with the legislative guideline that permits any such qualified machinist to do so.
